Stray Puppy Shot with Metal Pellets Loses Eye but Beats Deadly Parvovirus Near Beirut

On a quiet stretch of road just outside Beirut, the afternoon sun bore down with unrelenting heat. Amid this unforgiving landscape, a tiny puppy, no older than two months, wandered without direction. Her frail body trembled, carrying the weight of injuries far beyond what anyone would expect for one so young.

When a passing car began to slow, offering a simple bottle of water, this small creature cautiously approached, tentative but driven by thirst. It was then that a troubling wound came into sharp focus — a severe injury that hinted at a deep story of suffering hidden beneath her delicate fur.

Despite her evident fear and pain, the puppy gave a faint wag of her tail, a quiet gesture of hope as she reached out for a moment of kindness. This brief connection marked the first sign of a fragile trust that would be tested and slowly rebuilt in the days to come.

Uncovering a Hidden Cruelty

Amal Andari, a volunteer for Animals Lebanon, and her companion had been driving through a rural area near Beirut when they spotted the vulnerable pup. As the dog edged closer, a disturbing puncture wound on her head became impossible to ignore. Locals nearby casually dismissed the injury as the result of an animal encounter, but Amal’s experience told her otherwise.

The puppy’s timid approach and hesitation spoke of deep-seated fear, yet she sought comfort amid humans despite her ordeal. Moving quickly, Amal took the pup to a veterinary clinic in Beirut, where the true extent of her wounds was revealed.

X-rays disclosed a cruel reality: the pup had been deliberately shot with numerous small metal pellets, a calculated act of violence rather than an accident. The veterinarians were stunned, faced with evidence of a brutality all too common for stray dogs in that region. Surgery to remove the fragments was ruled out; the risk of further harm outweighed the potential benefits.

Adding to her burden, the pup had lost sight in her left eye due to one of the pellet wounds, leaving her to navigate a world partially shaded in darkness. This alone transformed her view of life, yet her challenges were far from over.

A Battle Beyond the Visible Wounds

As medical staff provided care, a new adversary emerged—parvovirus, a highly contagious and often deadly illness among puppies. The diagnosis was sobering. Bondok, as she was later named, faced less than a quarter chance of survival. The clinic prepared for a slow, careful fight, demanding constant attention and round-the-clock treatment.

Over four draining days, Bondok endured intensive therapies and antibiotics, her small body wavering on the edge. Yet throughout the long nights, something remarkable endured alongside her fragile frame: a resilient spirit. Amal observed this quietly, noting how Bondok seemed to possess an innate will to hold on to life even in the bleakest hours.

“She has an appetite for life; she wanted to live—I believe that,” Amal recalled, witnessing the dog’s struggle with a profound mix of hope and disbelief.

From Fear to Playfulness: A New Chapter Begins

Defying the grim expectations, Bondok overcame the virus. A week later, she left the clinic, transitioning into a foster home where her more lively side quickly emerged. The once frightened and fragile puppy became a whirlwind of energy, engaging joyfully with her foster siblings. Her playful wrestling matches were a stark contrast to the tentative steps she had taken roadside, hinting at a future filled with promise rather than fear.

Currently, Animals Lebanon is seeking a permanent, caring family to welcome Bondok and provide the safe home beyond the borders of her war-torn region. The journey from that dusty roadside to a place of comfort has been long and difficult, but her newfound vitality shows how far she has come.

Amal reflected on Bondok’s resilience, emphasizing a truth that resonates throughout the work of rescuers everywhere:

“They can break her body with their cruelty, but they could never extinguish the beautiful, trusting light she was meant to bring into this world.”

“Sometimes, the smallest sign of trust is the moment that tells you how far an animal has already come.”
